Cozy Winter Twig Wreath DIY and all the FAILS along the way!

One day I saw this cozy, out door winter deck on Pinterest, and I thought- I’m going to do my porch all wintery and cozy like that this Christmas! But I need a wreath to fit the aesthetic! I’ll just whip one up my brain said. While I was very happy with the end result, keep scrolling for the fAiLs along the way!

Gather supplies: Wire, grapevine wreath, hot glue and gun (optional), fur pom poms and lil’ mittens, ribbon, flocking and glitter snow! Oh yeah, and FAIRY LIGHTS! (By the way,  as an Amazon Associate, I earn a little bit from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.) If you live by a Costco, get the fairy lights there, it’s much less expensive. Also, get the wreath, fur pom poms and wire at a Hobby Lobby or Michaels if possible.

Do you have branch clippings around? Grab a bunch of those, or go trim up your trees a bit (or your neighbors, haha). Below is the bed of our truck full of branches. I used quite a lot because I only wanted the twiggy ends!

Branches for twig wreath

Ok, start with a little bundle of twigs…

Small bundle of twigs

Wrap the wire around the bottom portion of the bundle a few times, and without cutting the wire, wrap it around the wreath.

Keep wiring bundles together and then wiring them onto the grapevine wreath until you work all the way around. I also added gobs of hot glue on top of each bundle on the wire, after they were wired on, for extra hold. Totally optional! Now, my first FAIL is that I didn’t measure the wreath and at this point it was too big for my door! I had to chop off about 3 - 4 inches on each side so my door could open and shut normally. It was very sad because some of the ends of my branches had cute teeny tiny berry things on them that I had to cut off. wah! At this point, I also strung my ribbon through the top of the wreath, well, where I thought the top looked best.

Winter Twig wreath all “flocked”.

Seriously?!? My flocking isn’t FLUFFY? I thought all flocking was fluffy, apparently not. 2nd FAIL! My “flock” is more like white spray paint, and I was so ticked off and grumpy bum at this point. SO, I tried adding in some cotton to get that snowy effect and added the lights. I sprayed it with “flock” again, which made the cotton sort of MELT. Then added the fur pom poms to see if that would help…

The next day I went as far as HANGING THIS STINKY THING ON MY DOOR! I tried to live with it for a few days. But after going outside to stare at it six times (in an hour) I took it down because it was not hitting my cozy winter twiggy goals. I brought it inside, went and bought more fur pom poms and some icy twiggy picts, ripped off the cotton and re-worked the center and…

SO MUCH BETTER! Now I’m getting the cozy winter vibes I was going for!

Sometimes you gotta keep trying. What’s that quote? Something about you only fail when you stop trying? It’s good advice for me I guess.
